Building Capacity in Mangrove Conservation – IIRR Philippines has held a Mangrove and Beach Forest Rehabilitation and Conservation Training event in Guinayangan, Quezon on July 25th 2022. The training was delivered as part of the Improving Coastal Resilience and Ecosystem Services through Biodiversity Conservation (ICORE) project.
Attended by community farmers, fisherfolk leaders, and representatives from the barangay local government units, the training included mangrove management and reforestation techniques. With this, community members will be able to improve their management practices, which will help increase the resilience of reforested mangroves and promote sound mangrove management policies. In response to the training, Francis Atienza, a fisherfolk group leader, called for more support in conserving mangroves:
“Let us all help and care for the environment. I cannot do all the work for conserving our sea alone. I hope you will help me since most of us depend on the sea,” the community leader said.
In addition, local farmers and fisherfolks have started their own mangrove nursery in cooperation with IIRR-Philippines, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Central Office, and Guinayangan Municipal Local Government Unit.
