IIRR bridges a huge education gap in pastoralists and marginalized communities and implements the Giving Girls a Second Chance in Education Project in Marsabit and Samburu counties in Northern Kenya. The project integrates measures to eradicate harmful cultural practices like female genital mutilation or cutting (FGM/C) and forced child marriage of girls at a young age, which makes up to 50% rate of girls dropout.
Students are encouraged to improve their academic performance and thought critical life skills using interactive learning techniques through the Cluster Education Forum approach. CEF enables networking of primary and secondary schools in similar geographical locations.
Over 12,200 learners in sixteen primary schools and eight secondary schools gained an education in the last three years and 125,000 learners benefitted in about 100 schools in the last twenty years.
IIRR Kenya also supports livestock trading and connects livestock producers to sustainable markets and support services. To date, over 50,000 livestock keepers have sustainable income and stable food production.
